Art Rituals
The ‘love letter’ series are multi art-form rituals that involves participant letter writing, live music and origami to construct a symbolic sculpture around the themes of death, grief and loss.
The aim of the ‘love letter’ series is to explore the complex and often taboo topics of death, loss, heartbreak and loneliness through secular ritual. It dynamically and sensitively guides participants through an exploration of these personal and yet universal themes through intricately designed spaces and actions.
The ‘Love Letter’ series is a collaboration with lead origami artist Noriko Ikaga, performance artist Wai Zea (Glitter and Snatch), sound artist Francesca Sculli (Frank Inc, The Stain) and Sculpture artist and fabricator John Hall. The work also involves a dozen volunteer origami folders and ritual support workers. The series has had the assistance and guidance from ritual artist and academic Dr Margie Mackay (University of Melbourne, The D&M Project).
This work is in its third instalment, with the previous two works Love letters to loss and Letters to my broken heart being commissioned and performed at the Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF) 2018/2019. These two events were both nominated by the MWF board as being highlights of the festival, with Love letters to loss being named as ‘one of the best literary events of the year’ by Overland magazine 2018. Love Letters to loneliness is in a funded research stage with a hopeful creative outcome in 2021.
